This picture is obviously a good example of The Great Depression in the south. The viewer can see a typical house during the depression which is inhabited with African Americans. The weeds have taken over the yard and are growing all around the houses, along the long dirt road. The poorly built house has wooden siding and is standing unstably on concrete blocks. The houses foundation is not very strong. This photograph is in black and white, the more common picture type, back in the 1930s. The photograph shows several houses in a row with very small yards. Back in the 1930s it was common for lower income houses to be placed near each other. The woman and her child do not look happy about the situation their in. I cannot tell the time of day but, the child seems to be sitting alone on the porch, not attending school, being deprived of an education, a characteristic of the 1930's. These people didn't enjoy the privileges and luxuries we enjoy today.

Observe:
1. Describe what you see.- I see a a poverty stricken African American family gathered outside a farm house. The 5 children and 3 adults all appear to be looking in a certain direction. I can see a huge plot of land in the background, I cannot tell whether or not the family owns the land.

2.What do you notice first? I notice the family all gather outside on the porch.

3.What people and objects are shown? There are 8 African Americans, 5 children and 3 adults. The objects shown are a neglected house and land to farm on.

Reflect:
1.What’s happening in the image? The people are staring at something that is near their house.

2.What can you learn from examining this image? I learned that African American families could barely afford clothing, and a house. The relied on manual labor and farming to provide food and what ever money they could.

3.If someone made this today, what would be different? Things would defiantly be different, they would have been educated enough to hold at least a minimum wage job. The house today would have a stronger foundation and be able to support a larger family. The family would also be able to afford better food and clothing.

Questions:
What are the people in the photo staring at?
Is that their farm or do they just work on site in the fields?

Observe:
1.Describe what you see. I see white sharply dressed business man standing in front of McCollum's Grocery. He appears to be looking at the produce displayed in the stores window and out in front of the store.

2.What do you notice first? I notice the nicely dressed man standing in front of a store looking at the displays.

3.What is the physical setting? The physical setting appears to be a residential street where like this many shops would be located. My guess is that this is probably a main street downtown.

Reflect:
1.What’s happening in the image? A man has stopped to view what produce this grocery store has to offer.

2.If someone made this today, what would be different? If this were made today the grocery store would probably have been bought out by a large corporation such as Stop & Shop. All of the fresh food would be located inside unless it was a farmers market, which it does not seem to be. The prices on all the food would also be modern prices and probably cost a few dollars, instead of just a couple of cents.

3.What would be the same? Personal, I don't think anything would be the same. A new business probably would of bought out the store.

Questions:
What was the man looking to buy?
Why were the prices so cheap?
Is that a segregated grocery store? Is it for blacks... whites.. or both races?

Observe:
1.Describe what you see. I see 3 young white girls and a young boy standing in a fenced in yard in front of what appears to be a water well. I seem to think they are fetching water.

2.What is the physical setting? The setting seems to be on a farm near wooded area.

3.What other details can you see? I notice some watering pails on the ledge behind them. I notice all of the children aren't wearing anything on their feet, but all seem to wearing presentable clothing.

Reflect:
1.Why do you think this image was made? I think this image was made to show they life of a little, happy, white family doing the chore of fetching water. It shows that everyone is willing to pitch in to help the family.

2. What’s happening in the image? The kids seemed to be posing for a family picture as they fetch the water.

3.What’s missing from this image? Whats missing is a residential town, it seems like this area is on the outskirts of town.

Questions:
What happened to their shoes?

Questions:
1. Where are all the people? Are they inside the movie theater?
2. Why is the theater so small?
